The secondary school system in Ireland is split into two cycles, the junior and the senior cycle. The junior cycle encompasses first, second, and third year of secondary school. Students enter first year at the age of twelve, following the completion of eight years of primary school. The junior cycle concludes in third year, following the completion of the state examination known as the Junior Certificate.
In between the junior and the senior cycle, students generally take part in Transition Year. Transition year students are between 15 and 17 years old. While it varies between schools, Transition Year is usually less academic and more self-motivated than other years, focusing on personal growth and education. Students often take electives and skill-building modules (self-defense, first aid training, a new language, work experience etc). Transition year helps students expand their personal interests and boost their maturity ahead of beginning the senior cycle.
The senior cycle comprises of 5th and 6th year, and leads to the final secondary school state examination known as the Leaving Certificate. Students are usually around 18 years old when they sit their Leaving Certificate, and their exam results are important as they lead to university acceptance and graduation from secondary school.

Day school students are accommodated with our carefully selected host families and are enrolled in a local day school which can either be public or private, as requested. All our host families are visited by an LLI representative and are chosen because of their suitability to host an academic year student. Host families are warm and welcoming and treat the student as they would their own family member. Host families live within walking distance or a short journey by public transport from the selected High School. The student has breakfast and dinner with the host family and they are provided with a packed lunch. During the weekend all meals are with the host family.
Boarding school students are generally accommodated in dormitories which are shared with their fellow students. Many schools have small two or four bedded rooms with bathroom facilities, and some final year students have single rooms. Students have all their meals in the school cafeteria and there is generally a tuck shop where snacks can be purchased. Boarding allows the student to take part in a range of sporting and recreational activities in a caring supportive community composed of fellow students, teachers and house parents. Many boarding schools are 5 day boarding and the student lives with a carefully selected host family at the weekend returning to school on Sunday evening. Some schools offer 7 day boarding and this should be requested if desired when completing the application.
School days generally start at 8.45 am between finish 4pm-4.30 pm. Lunch will be prepared by the host family in the morning and given to the student to eat during their lunch break in school. Some Homestay students may go home for lunch depending on where the school is in relation to their host family. Students may have a half day on Wednesday and finish early on a Friday.
